Christian Eriksen is set for a sensational return to football when Brentford host Newcastle in a relegation clash that could define their season.

Tomorrow’s 3pm kick-off will be the Danish international's first competitive fixture since his cardiac arrest against Finland in the European Championships eight months ago.

The 30-year-old was signed by Brentford on a six-month contract in January after he was released by Inter Milan, already impressing by creating both goals in the Bees 2-2 friendly with Rangers on Monday, adding to his assist against Southend last week.

Brentford manager Thomas Frank said: “Christian Eriksen will be in the squad and he will get on the pitch tomorrow. It’s a big day for all of us but especially Christian and his family.”

“There is no doubt he is the player with the biggest CV who has ever played for Brentford, and when you see him training it is remarkable the things he has been doing.”

“We will need a few games to get him going, but I would not put him in there if I didn’t think he could provide something now.”

The Spurs star’s debut cannot come at a better time with 18th placed Burnley just four points behind the Bees with three games in hand, after the Clarets picked up their second consecutive victory against Eriksen’s former side.

Brentford had a flying start to the season, but a winless run of one point in seven matches has dragged them into a relegation scrap, while fellow strugglers Newcastle could leapfrog them on Saturday with barely a third of the campaign remaining.

The sides November meeting at St James Park ended in a 3-3 thriller, but on that occasion it was the Magpies who hadn’t won a game all season.

Fast forward to now and it is Eddie Howe’s team looking for their fourth win in five, following a remarkable turnaround.

Frank will welcome the return of top scorer Ivan Toney and Newcastle will be without key men Callum Wilson, Matt Ritchie and Kieran Trippier, with Allan Saint-Maximin also a doubt.

But the Toon are still favourites in a game Brentford cannot afford to lose with an April that includes games against Chelsea, United, West Ham and Tottenham.

Frank added: “You always try to look up the table but I am not stupid. I know other teams are winning, but the only thing we can focus on is ourselves.

“We have been approaching the league one game at a time – just like we did in the Championship – and our approach needs to be brave, aggressive and cool in every aspect.

“If we put performances in like that it will turn around, but if we go into this game with a different approach, then that is going to be an incident.”
