Youngster Luca Westbrook is proving a skiing sensation after winning two under-10s GB Alpine Mini Races.

The nine-year-old from Richmond has won the kombi and giant slalom as part of a week of racing in Tignes, at the 2019 GB Alpine Championships.

He celebrated winning with a time of 38.24 seconds in the giant slalom before following it up with a 1:06.90 in the kombi – more than two seconds fastest than under other under-10.

“It’s really cool to race here and I’m just really proud of what I have done,” said Westbrook, who usually races and competes in the Swiss system.

“The course is really steep for the kombi and the race was just so much fun, almost like ski cross.

“I love skiing because it’s just the sport for me. It gives me the chance to go fast when I am racing and taking part.

“I enjoy doing the techniques for the different disciplines, it’s interesting to learn how to do them. It’s cool to take part with all the other racers.

“It’s my first time here so I wasn’t sure where I would finish but I’m just happy to be here. It’s great to be the fastest British skier in the races.”

The children’s championship runs in Tignes from April 8 to 12, with more than 300 youngsters taking part across 12 different disciplines and age groups.

It follows a week of exhilarating action for the GB Delancey Alpine Championships, where some of the country’s best senior skiers take to the French slopes to battle it out in for a host of silverware.

The event is a breeding ground for the next generation of British alpine talent, as the UK aims to become one of the top five Olympic ski and snowboarding nations by 2030.

And Westbrook is a shining example of the potential stars of the future, showing his skills across the disciplines.

His father Andrew was delighted to see his son enjoying the event against Britain’s best skiers.

“Luca did fantastically well and I’m really proud for what he has done here,” he added.

“It’s great for him to see the big British event, it’s the first one he’s done.

“Usually Luca skis in the Swiss system but everything here has been so friendly and brilliantly organised for us.

“It’s a fantastic atmosphere of togetherness for everyone who is involved.”
