Worcester ski ace Scarlett Wakeford couldn’t contain her excitement as she showed off her piste potential at the English Alpine Skiing Championships in Bormio, Italy.

The Championships, one of the biggest annual events in the skiing calendar, was the launchpad for Dave Ryding’s career before he went on to World Cups.

Wakeford is one of 440 athletes have descended on the Dolomites for six days of riveting racing in pitch-perfect piste conditions across super-G, giant slalom and slalom disciplines.

And the Abberley Hall School pupil shone on Stella Alpina piste, her time of 50.56s placing her tenth overall in the under-10 category, a result with which she was delighted.

“My mouth went dry when I was going down!” explained the nine-year-old.

“It gets really icy, but it feels amazing in the middle when you’re flying down. I think I went fast and I was happy with the race.

“I don’t train, I just ski on holiday. I first started skiing when I was three, so I’ve been doing it for a long time.

“I like skiing because it’s magical, you can feel the wind and it’s just really fun. I definitely want to keep skiing in the future.”
