QPR manager Steve McClaren was blown away by his side’s attacking display as they came back from a goal down to get the better of rivals Brentford 3-2 on Saturday.

Brentford went ahead through Championship top scorer Neal Maupay, but the R’s kept their composure to battle their way back into the tie after Massimo Luongo’s equaliser.

Defender Joel Lynch turned the tie on its head by thumping home from close range before on-loan striker Nahki Wells sent Loftus Road into jubilation by adding a third only two minutes later.

Henrik Dalsgaard pulled one back, but QPR held out to clinch a fourth win in their last five matches, much to the delight of former England manager McClaren.

“We just blew Brentford away by getting the three goals and then defended for our lives towards the end,” he said.

“We showed great character to come back and win the game.

“In the first half we were trying to force them to make errors, we were just poor in the final third with the final ball.

“I said at half-time to just keep going and keep working hard but be better in the final third.

“It’s a massive win. The place was rocking in the second half. We have a nice break now and we go again.

“We had a blip against Blackburn, but you are going to lose in the Championship, it’s the reaction that is important and they’ve given it today.”

QPR have only conceded three goals in their last seven matches and McClaren’s emphasis on strengthening the backline proved pivotal as Brentford failed to grab a last gasp equaliser.

The R’s have also kept five clean sheets in their last seven and Brentford manager Thomas Frank pointed to their west London rivals impressive defensive record in the run up to the game.

Yet Frank was left feeling disappointed by his side’s own defensive frailties as they slipped to a tenth game without a win in all competitions.

“In ten minutes we defended too soft with not enough desire,” he admitted.

“We need to get out of those short spells and we cannot concede three goals, maybe one but not three.

“It’s definitely something we need to assess when we analyse the game and we need to look through what kind of detail went wrong.

“We need to address the mentality and the competitiveness in the duels and not be too soft with these situations.”

The result was further dampened by the sights of top scorer Maupay and fellow creative outlet Saïd Benrahma being stretchered off the pitch during the defeat.

The injuries only add to Brentford's worries with forward Ollie Watkins forced to miss out against QPR due to a knock.

Frank wasn’t able to offer an insight into when those players will return, but admitted the list of casualties is a concern for his side.

He said: “Neal had a concussion and we will know more about that in the next couple of days and Said rolled his ankle, we don’t know how worrying it is. Hopefully not too bad.

“Let me put it this way, there’s a couple of players we need to get back on the grass.”
