Netflix and physio is the perfect remedy admits Ilkeston’s Ella Taylor-Tipton as the freestyle skier recovers from her first major injury of her career.

The 14-year-old ruptured her anterior crucial ligament eight weeks ago in Glasgow, requiring surgery and nine months of rehab.

Having such a serious injury so young might have deterred some but not Taylor-Tipton, who had part of her hamstring taken from both legs in order to fix the injury.

It had been a positive year before injury for Taylor-Tipton, competing in the British Ski Slopestyle Championships, finishing third in the under 18s category, and will set her sights on a return to action next July.

She said: “I took part in the British competition out in LAAX in April. I did Big Air, slopestyle and half pipe, and I finished third in the slopestyle.

“I was really pleased because I fell on my run in big air. My half pipe I was beaten and slope style I managed to get through to the final. I put a spin in to what I normally do and it got me to third.

“I’ve got a lot of rehab because on the 23rd June in Glasgow I ruptured my ACL. Eight weeks ago I had surgery on it. I have nine months of rehab. It’s my first proper injury. It was horrible and not fun at all.

“I went to see my consultant recently and I am seeing him again in six months. I am making sure I get fit by then because he said he could give me the all clear to start doing sport again. It will give me the goal in July of going to America to do a scholarship for a week.

“In surgery they had to take a hamstring from both legs because the one in my injured leg wasn’t strong enough or long enough. I was home the second day and it was going fine.

“I’m doing physio all the time at home. Netflix and physio are helping me get back to where I should be.”

Taylor-Tipton was speaking at a SportsAid event in the House of Commons as part of the charity’s new partnership with GVC Holdings, meeting with the likes of Paralympic champions Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson and Danny Crates.

Freestyle skiing clearly runs in the family with older brother Justin also competing for Great Britain.

Justin also took part in the British Championships at the LAAX in Switzerland and the 18-year-old is hoping to add more to his routines as winter approaches.

He said: “This year I spent the winter away in Switzerland training. It was a laugh and a lot of training. We did two or three competitions.

“The first Big Air gave me an amazing practice day and then I crashed both runs in my competition. The next one I got to the finals of that and finished 11th overall.

“It was my first international competition at the LAAX Open in the slopestyle. I was really happy with that.

“I want to get some more double flips because the nature of the sport is do flips, do rail tricks, get points. I want to get another direction of flip so it’s harder and I get a better slopestyle run and I will go from there.”
