TAKING part in the Bank of Scotland Great Scottish Run was always going to be a poignant experience for Trevor Black.

The Glenrothes native was running in memory of his grandson Oliver, who died from cancer when he was just two months old.

The 65-year-old has thus far raised over £10,000 for Love Oliver – a charity set up by Trevor’s daughter Jennifer and her husband Andy after Oliver’s passing – a number that is ever increasing.

The charity, which helps to fund research into childhood cancer and provides support to families affected, has now received upward of £530,000 in donations since it was founded in 2011.

Bank of Scotland, which sponsors the Great Scottish Run, launched the Community Challenge to help get Scotland active.

The campaign aims to recruit one runner from each of the 32 local authorities in Scotland to take on a ‘10 week to 10k’ running challenge.

And given the success of this year’s event, Trevor has already pinned his hopes on competing again when the race comes around again next year.

“I very much enjoyed completing the 10k on Sunday and hope to do it all over again next year,” he said.

“I am feeling very fit and active now and doing this has helped to raise more awareness for our family Love Oliver charity.

“I also hope that my exploits will encourage other 65-year-olds to take up running.”

Each runner embarked on their own personal journey in a '10 week to 10k' challenge, receiving a personalised training programme by an expert coach in the weeks leading up to the run, which took place on September 30.

And Trevor, who represented Fife on the day, made sure to stress that their plight – and those of others in similar circumstances – is by no means over, and that there is still plenty of work to be done.

“Not only given me huge encouragement to keep fit in my senior years, but the run has encouraged many other friends and family members to take part over the years to raise much needed funds for childhood cancer charity Love Oliver, in memory of my little grandson Oliver,” he added.
