Peterborough's Lee Manning has just one thing on his mind as he prepares to represent Great Britain at the Wheelchair Basketball World Championships in Germany – and that’s coming back with a medal; preferably a gold one.

The British squad boasts vast experience, including eight of the 12 players who contributed to the bronze medal-winning performance at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games – and will be skippered by 24-yearold Phil Pratt.

Britain face Poland, South Korea and the United States in Pool B – and head into the World Championships in excellent form having gone undefeated at British Wheelchair Basketball’s recent Continental Clash in Sheffield.

And Manning, 28, who plays at centre, is determined to make his mark on one of the biggest stages of them all, he said: “It’s one of the greatest honours there is. This is my second World Championships, I am really looking forward to it,” said Manning, who will be competing at the event that kicks off on August 26.

“There’s nothing that can describe it. The buzz you get from representing your country and having GB across the chest, nothing can compare to it.

“Preparation has been really good. We have had two friendly tournaments in Sheffield and a tournament in Poland. We were lucky enough to win every game thus far, so hopefully it will continue into the world’s.

“We got a bronze medal at the Paralympics two years ago and we will try and go one step further, make the final and hopefully come back with that gold.”

Manning insists Britain are as well prepared as they can be for the competition in Hamburg and revealed the intense battles that have been taking place in training.

“We are really fiercely competitive, every training session we do, we are going to go at the other person because that’s what we do during the game,” he added.

“The fact that we are actually good team-mates off the court means there’s no friction or animosity between us, we are good mates.

“GB have never won a gold medal at a World Championships, so we are hopefully going to bring it back. The USA are going to be our toughest opponents.”
