A week can be a long time in sport and nobody knows that more than Georgia Hall after the Bournemouth golfer endured a tough European Golf Championship.

The 22-year-old became the first Englishwoman to win a major in 14 years when she clinched the British Open title eight days ago.

But a week on and Hall was left feeling a completely different emotion as she missed out on a medal alongside Laura Davies in the team competition at Gleneagles.

The pair, who won all their group games, threw away a three shot lead in the semi-final against Sweden, meaning they’d enter the bronze medal match against fellow Brits Meghan MacLaren and Michele Thomson.

The pair recovered quickly to go one up against their compatriots but missed shots ensured the two British sides were level heading into the final five holes.

The duo continued to be wasteful in the driving rain, allowing MacLaren and Thomson to capitalise and take the bronze medal.

The final day of competition was played in appalling conditions and Hall questioned the decision to switch the format from four-ball, which was played during the group stages, to foursomes.

She said: “We were used to playing four ball so to then be playing to foursomes is a bit strange and we had to adapt to that but playing 36 holes in those conditions.

“Then we only had a 45-minute break and we had to go out there and get back straight on it. It was a bit of nightmare for us but it’s done now and we move on.

“It’s a bit different to last week. We had to work really hard out there and it wasn’t easy. It was absolutely freezing out there. Playing so much golf in that was horrendous.

“I’ve got a week off now where I’m in Canada which will be nice, then I’m back the following week.”

Teammate Laura Davies was equally fuming at the change as well as the back-to-back semi-final and bronze medal showdown.

She said: “That was pure misery, 36 holes of torture basically. It’s a real shame actually.

“I’m struggling to find out why we didn’t do the four ball on Saturday. Doing foursomes in that weather wasn’t fun, it was a lot of hard work.

“It’s great if you win. It’s not miserable when you win but when you lose like that then it’s no fun.”
