Laura Davies dubbed her final day of the European Golf Championships as miserable after the experienced golfer missed out on a medal at Gleneagles.

The Coventry golfer had looked well set to add to her honours cabinet after winning every group match of the team event alongside recent British Open champion Georgia Hall.

But it wasn’t to be for the 54-year-old as the duo let a three-shot lead slip against Sweden in the semi-final.

Her misery was compounded as she and Hall lost to fellow Brits Michele Thomson and Meghan MacLaren 3&1 in treacherous conditions.

Davies, a four-time major champion, was left perplexed by the decision to switch the format from four-ball, which had been played for the group stages, to the foursomes.

She said: “That was pure misery, 36 holes of torture basically. It’s a real shame actually, I’m struggling to find out why we didn’t do the four ball on Saturday. Doing foursomes in that weather wasn’t fun, it was a lot of hard work.

“It’s great if you win. It’s not miserable when you win but when you lose like that then it’s no fun.

“I don’t understand the change of format to be honest. Why not have the semi-final Saturday and then the final on Sunday.

“It would’ve been brilliant fun. That wasn’t fun, unless you’ve won in which case I’m sure it’s great fun, we all love winning.”

Despite missing out on a medal, Davies has enjoyed a good 2018 after picking up the inaugural US Open Senior competition in Chicago last month.

It may have ended in disappointment at Gleneagles but Davies has enjoyed her time in Scotland for the first European Golf Championship.

She said: “I think the whole thing has been great. The set-up, the way we’ve been welcomed, the grandstands, the volunteers, they’re everywhere.

“You cannot speak highly enough of them but we speaking after losing two matches on the trot in freezing conditions, it’s hard to be positive but I am positive with the whole thing.

“Just to say you were part of the European Championships here has been amazing.”
