Four months ago, Adam Peaty was defeated over 50m at the Commonwealth Games but last night he blew any doubts over his breaststroke dominance out of the water.

A new European Swimming Championship record was the reward as he amends for that uncharacteristic blot on his copybook by winning his third gold of the week in Glasgow with ease.

Known as the splash and dash, the 50m breaststroke can often be a lottery but Peaty, the world record holder, has made it his own – which is why that silver on the Gold Coast was such a shock.

And he admits he had a point to prove in the European final last night after finishing in 26.09s – just 0.16s off his world record time.

“I tried to right my wrongs and it just proves that I can get near that world record now and maybe next year even touch it again," he said.

“The execution from me was a nine but the race was a ten out of ten. I missed a few strokes and that cost me something but I think even if I got them I would not have got a new world record.

“But for next year at the World Championships it is looking strong. It is looking very good technique-wise and very good power-wise.

“I am looking forward to South Korea and hopefully getting around that mark again. If I did that time at the Commonwealths I would be wondering how to build on that.”

Peaty is still on track for the triple quad, as he aims to win four gold medals for the third straight European Championships.

With the 100m already and 4x100m mixed medley relay in his back pocket and the 50m now secured, it leaves just the men’s 4x100m mixed medley – and the 23-year-old insists he is ready to bag Great Britain another gold.

Do that and it would complete what has been a fine week in the pool, with the likes of Georgia Davies and Duncan Scott both multiple gold medallists.

But Peaty remains the star attraction, both in and out of the pool.

“It is incredible. I don’t like to communicate when I am racing, I like to stay focussed,” he added.

“But it is nice to see my family on the left and my nan came in with a flag, bless her, so it gives me the extra step up.

“I am going to stay neutral now. I am going to rest for the rest of the day, get ready for the morning and then put on a good show against Russia.

“I don’t think people realise how much a home crowd means to us. It is the kind of stuff that gives the extra ten per cent.”
