QPR winger Luke Freeman hopes his winner against AFC Wimbledon will open the floodgates for a prolific season.

Rangers beat Wimbledon 1-0 on Saturday in a pre-season friendly, with Freeman slotting in a rebound with almost the last touch of the match for his first goal since their 3-1 victory against Aston Villa in March.

Although making 12 assists last season – which put him joint-second in the Championship – Freeman admits his aim for the upcoming campaign is to find the net more consistently.

“It’s something I spoke to the gaffer about. I’m desperate to get more goals this year,” said the 26-year-old.

“I don’t seem to have as much of a problem with assists, which I want to maintain, but I want to score more as well, so it was good to get on the scoresheet.

“It was very tough. For a lot of the boys, it was their first 90 in very hot, sticky conditions as well.

“It’s under our belt now and we’ll benefit from it but actually getting through it was a lot tougher than normal.”

Looking ahead to QPR’s next pre-season friendly against Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim in Germany, Freeman revealed his optimistic outlook for the contest and his excitement for the season to get underway.

“Hoffenheim are the test you want. You want to be playing against these teams. It’s only going to put us in good stead for the start of the season," said the former Bristol City man.

“We can’t wait for it. We’ll get back into training on Monday, train hard and back end of the week, we’ll go out to Germany, so I’m looking forward to it.

“I can’t wait for the new season.

“You enjoy your summer then once you start getting back into pre-season, you get the nitty-gritty running and the hard work out the way. Then, you start seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, which is the first game of the season. The lads are itching to get back for it.”

Assistant manager John Eustace also revealed the positive progress he believes the R’s squad is making as the 2018-19 campaign looms.

Eustace said: “We were just looking for fitness and to try and get one or two things into the game that we’ve been trying to give them, and there was certainly that at times.

“Don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot more work to come, but the lads’ attitudes and the way the manager [Steve McClaren] is with them means they’re learning every day.

“You can see the boys are getting fitter and stronger, which is going to be vital.”
