Glasgow City can only treat their SSE Scottish Women’s Cup campaign one win at a time insists boss Scott Booth after their clinical 3-0 defeat of Forfar Farmington.

Skipper Leanne Ross’s first-half effort and Abbi Grant’s double sealed safe passage into the third round for the eight-time winners, with the Scottish Women’s Premier League outfit unable to make their mark.

But the SSE Scottish Women’s Cup has heralded only heartbreak for Booth of late, with this latest victory redoubling intent to make this romp the start of a long cup run.

“We’ve had a tough time in the cups recently,” said Booth, whose side suffered final defeats to Hibernian in 2016 and 2017.

“Our players are used to winning and like to win trophies, so they’re hurt at how the last couple of years have gone.

“We’re really desperate to go as far as we can in this tournament and this was a really hard test for us to start with.”

Booth’s returning international stars, part of a Tartan Army two wins away from a first ever World Cup appearance, weighed in with key contributions at Station Park.

Keeper Lee Alexander made a stunning second-half double save to keep a clean sheet, while Jo Love and Leanne Crichton were assured in midfield.

“We’re delighted to get through,” said Booth, capped 22 times under Craig Brown.

“I felt we played very well, were aggressive and worked hard to control possession and create chances."

In their early season Scottish Women’s Premier League fixture, newly-promoted Farmington frustrated City for 88 minutes in a scrappy contest.

But City had a vice-like grip on this game from the third minute when Kirsty Howat forced a save and Grant struck the bar from 18 yards out.

In the build-up Booth demanded a clinical display and got one; Ross curled in a free-kick, Grant nodded home from a set piece before the same player finished a flowing move.

“The game was a little bit more stretched this time and that suited us,” said Booth, whose side face three league fixtures before breaking for the whole of July.

“We realised it’s a lot wider pitch at Forfar than at our home so we could utilise that more and we got in behind them in the wide areas.

“We’re back at Forfar next week in the league and have Hamilton Academical midweek – it doesn’t get easier and we want to arrive at the break in good shape.”
