Ezri Konsa has said he was attracted to new club Brentford by their ambitions, after signing from Charlton Athletic on Tuesday.

The 20-year-old has agreed a three-year contract, with the Bees having the option of extending it a further 12 months.

The defender believes Dean Smith’s team can now aim for promotion to the Premier League after finishing six points off the play-offs last season.

He said: “I’m really delighted to be at such a great club like Brentford, it was a great feeling for me to sign so I’m really happy.

“Playing in the Championship, having a lot of experience playing at a high level, I think I'm going to learn a lot here.”

“Obviously it was hard for me, I grew up at Charlton as well but at the end of the day it’s my career and I think Brentford’s a really good club for me to come to.”

He made his debut for the Addicks in August 2016 and went on to make 86 appearances for the club in all competitions.

Last season he was an ever-present in the team that reached the League One play-offs, losing 2-0 to Shrewsbury Town in the semi-finals.

The Charlton academy graduate joined as an Under-11 in 2009, and has thanked the coaches, staff and players, that have helped him in the nine years.

The defender has just come back from the Toulon Tournament, where he was part of the England Under-21 squad that beat Mexico 2-1 in the final.

He said: “It’s a proud moment for me and my family to represent my country, so for me to go out there and make my debut for England Under-21s was a great feeling.”
