Chelsea goalkeeper Carly Telford is a woman on a mission this season, determined to show new England boss Phil Neville she is worthy of continued selection for the national side.

Neville, 41, has coached at former club Manchester United, Valencia and England Under-21s.

The ex-England full-back takes over from Mo Marley, who had been in interim charge since Mark Sampson's departure.

And Telford, 30, is desperate to be part of Neville’s long-term planning for England and has her eyes firmly focussed on appearing at the 2019 World Cup.

Neville's contract runs through to the end of the 2021 UEFA Women's European Championship campaign – and Telford is convinced the former Manchester United man will be ruthless with his selection.

“Phil’s going to come in and have some decisions to make,” said Telford. “The World Cup’s only a year-and-a-half away now and is he going to plan for the future?

“Is he going to go with the players that are around already? Does he rock the boat early doors?

“We already know that we want to go and win it. I think Phil’s going to be very headstrong. He comes from a winning background.

“He was all about winning and he came from that class of ’92 and all they did was win, win, win, so I think he’s going to bring that into our camp.

“Not that we’ve never had that winning mentality but it’s small margins when you’re trying to go from third in the world to first in the world.

“I think that mentality that the Americans have and the Germans have is something that we now need to take on, and realise we are one of the strongest nations in the world.

“We’re now in the position where we’ve got a manager with one of the biggest winning mentalities in the game and it’s about how he’s going to put that into practice and get us the results in the major tournaments.”

The Lionesses will travel to Columbus, Ohio where they will play France at the MAPFRE Stadium on Thursday 1 March in the SheBelieves Cup.

They will then face Germany at the Red Bull Arena in New Jersey on Sunday 4 March, before playing the hosts and World Cup holders USA at Orlando City Stadium, Florida.

England’s away travels will give Neville the perfect opportunity to assess his squad, before he returns to the important business of World Cup qualification against Wales at St Mary’s Stadium in Southampton.

“We know that Wales is always a really good test and, at one of the better stadiums in the UK, we’re hoping that we can get a lot of tickets sold and pack St Mary’s out full of English faces,” said Telford.

“They’ve got some quick players like Natasha Harding, as well – she’s a fantastic player as well.

“It’s the big games that the big players love playing in and I’m sure that they’re going to be fired up and ready for it.

“It’s always good to see them playing well but hopefully not too well when we play against them.

“I think the SheBelieves Cup is going to be a real eye-opener for Phil as to the level of the top nations in the world but it also lets us know where we are.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for the young girls to get a look-in and maybe show Phil what they’re about.”
