Striker Ollie Watkins admitted Wolves were the best side Brentford have played this season after the league leaders comfortably beat Dean Smith’s men on Tuesday night.

The hosts ran out 3-0 winners after second half efforts from Ruben Neves, Barry Douglas and Diogo Jota gave the runaway Championships leaders a tenth win in 12 matches.

Brentford had frustrated the home side until that point but the hosts’ class shone through and proved too much in the end for the Bees.

And Watkins, who has seven goals in 18 appearances since his summer switch from Exeter, believes there is a good reason for Wolves being where they are in the division, but that he and his teammates could have done better on the night.

"We're all disappointed because in the first half, we didn't really create many chances,” he said. “We were still firmly in the game. [Daniel] Bentley made a few important saves.

“Going into the second half, we all felt quite comfortable and then, we’ve fallen asleep and they've scored.

"Stay in the game, they will get frustrated then everything will open up and we will start creating chances – then they scored two in quick succession and we found ourselves a couple of goals behind.

"I don't think we were as organised in the second half. We were all in the wrong position and against good teams, you will get punished.

"They are definitely the best team we have played and credit to them; I think they deserved to win it with their second half."
