Try-scorer Harry Sloan insists Harlequins’ Anglo-Welsh Cup victory was never in doubt after his side came back from 21 points down to defeat Saracens.

Josh Ibuanokpe, who was called into the matchday squad on the morning of the game after Phil Swainston failed a fitness test, scored the decisive try and James Lang’s successful conversion clinched the win.

After Sloan’s initial score, Quins built momentum through second-half tries from Alofa Alofa and Elia Elia.

As the visitors worked their way up to their 30th phase and the clock went red, it seemed a loss in their Anglo-Welsh opener was inevitable, but centre Sloan thought differently.

“On the tenth pick and go from half a metre out, I knew we could definitely do it,” he said.

“The forwards were unbelievable. They stuck at it and had a very good set-piece, and they tore them apart.

“We knew we were a good enough team and we just kept building and building with each kick-off.

“A win like that is absolutely brilliant. It’s a local derby against Saracens and the boys love it.

“We went and beat them last Sunday and we knew we had to build on it. It’s unbelievable – I haven’t had emotion like that in a while.”

The win was all the more impressive given that injury forced Quins to make four changes on the day of the game, with the visitors losing captain James Chisholm.

And after claiming five points, Sloan has his sights set firmly on claiming the Anglo-Welsh Cup – last won by the club in 2013 – as Harlequins prepare to face Worcester Warriors at the Stoop in round two.

“We’re in this to win silverware and we want to win the cup, so we need another win on Sunday,” he added.

“I love playing at the Stoop. It’s been a while since I’ve played a first-team game there. It’ll be great to get back in front of our home crowd.”
