Brentford midfielder Romaine Sawyers is convinced there is no better time than now to kick on after his side registered their first home win of the season on Saturday.

The 25-year-old stole the show in the Bees’ 1-0 victory over Millwall, scoring the only goal of the game with a 25-yard pile-driver just minutes into the second half.

That was the St. Kitts and Nevis international’s first strike since the Carabao Cup win over AFC Wimbledon back in August, but for him this was about more than just his own displays.

With Dean Smith’s side finally out of their slump in home form, Sawyers is confident this can be a turning point in their season as they look for the lofty heights of the play-offs.

“We haven’t had the best of luck so far this season but we are still in and around it,” he said.

“We are only eight points off the play-offs so we aren’t too far away.

“We are at the quarter point of the season now so we just have to keep building on our foundation. This is a good time to kick on.”

Despite this being the midfielder’s first goal since August 8, this strike was far from a coincidence.

In fact this was the culmination of plenty of hard work on the training ground and he was delighted it paid off when it mattered most at Griffin Park.

But the Bees also had goalkeeper David Bentley to thank, saving a penalty from the Lions’ Lee Gregory late on in the contest to leave his side 18th in the table.

“After training this week, Nico Yennaris took me aside and said we should do some finishing,” explained Sawyers.

"The one that the keeper tipped over in the first half was something we had been working on.  We spoke about shooting from distance before the game.

“Derby County did the same thing but we didn’t manage to get the shots off. The more shots that we take from long distance then the more they have to come out. We have to have different ways of attacking.”
