A lady from Vauxhall is proving that age is just a number as she completed the London Classics at Swim Serpentine on Saturday.

A unique and iconic challenge, the London Classics refers to an individual who successfully completes the Virgin Money London Marathon, the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 and the two-mile Swim Serpentine in the capital.

All three endurance events –  incorporating running, cycling and swimming – need not be completed in one calendar year but once achieved, the individual enters the Hall of Fame and is handed a finisher’s medal to mark the occasion.

The concept was introduced this year to coincide with the second edition of the Swim Serpentine event in Hyde Park – home to the 2012 Olympic open water swimming and triathlon events.

And while completing that feat is impressive enough, Edwina Brocklesby took things to another level given the fact she is 74 years of age and still going strong.

“I finished my two-mile swim so I’m absolutely overjoyed, in a park and a lake that I know very well and that I love,” she said.

“I haven’t been swimming long so that’s probably why I’m one of the slowest swimmers as well as one of the oldest swimmers.

“I didn’t start swimming until I was about 60 really, I’m 74 now.

“I have done the London Classics now. I’ve done the bike ride three times, I’ve probably done the marathon four or five times but this is my first swim.

“I have finished all three so I’m quite proud of that fact.”

Now in its second year, Swim Serpentine is a one-day open water swimming festival staged in the heart of the capital by the organisers of the Virgin Money London Marathon and Prudential RideLondon.

Almost 5,000 swimmers of all ages and abilities descended on Hyde Park on Saturday with Brocklesby completing her swim in 1:38:34 hours.

She added: “It’s absolutely fabulous here, I’m a member of the Serpentine running club and the Serpentine swimming club so I’m used to swimming over the other side, it’s absolutely lovely.

“I think open water swimming is quite hard but actually it’s quite a familiar course I’m swimming so it’s ok.”
