Head coach Dean Smith was left dumbfounded after a late sucker punch from Bristol City saw them snatch a 2-2 draw against Brentford last night.

The head coach saw his side register 24 shots to the visitors eight but Bobby Reid’s goal for the Robins eight minutes into added time earned Bristol a draw.

Josh Brownhill had put City ahead after five minutes but Ollie Watkins and Neal Maupay goals had the Bees in the lead despite a stunning performance from Frank Fielding in the Bristol goal.

And Brentford were denied all three points late on but head coach Smith is confident the Bees will be play-off contenders if they can replicate Tuesday night’s performance.

“If we play like that, week in week out, then we will be a top six team,” he said.

“I believe that Bristol City are a good team and there looked a massive gulf tonight. It was the most one-sided game in the Championship I have been involved in.

“How we didn’t get three points is beyond me but unfortunately a couple of ricochets have seen them score goals.

“I am proud of how they played. If you can go and dominate teams like we did tonight, then I have no problem.”

It was Brentford’s first league point of the season after defeats to Sheffield United and Nottingham Forest which moves them up to 20th in the Championship.

But there were concerns for Bees’ fans when Josh McEachran stretchered off in the latter stages after a performance that impressed boss Dean.

“Josh has gone over on this ankle and felt something,” he added.

“He has got stretchered off which was a disappointment because he was pulling the strings today. He looked fantastic out there and every bit a Premier League player to be honest.

“We are hoping that it is nothing serious and he will be back playing soon.”
