Twilight tickets for The 146th Open at Royal Birkdale sold out within hours of local hero Tommy Fleetwood winning the HNA Open de France.

The Southport golfer – who finished fourth at the US Open last month – continued his remarkable form to win at Le Golf National in Paris and top the Race to Dubai rankings.

Thousands of evening-only tickets have been sold, with the last remaining few snapped-up immediately after Fleetwood’s win in France.

Twilight Tickets give access to the course and the spectator village from 4pm on the Thursday and Friday Championship days.

Day tickets for all four days are still available, with The R&A continuing their Kids go Free policy of allowing under-16s to attend free with an adult.

The 146th Open is the fastest-selling to date and England’s North West has embraced Fleetwood’s meteoric rise ahead of his homecoming to Royal Birkdale on Championship week from July 16th to 23rd.

Nick Faldo was the last Englishman to win The Open 25 years ago and Fleetwood’s form has given local fans hope that the wait could be about to end.

Fleetwood grew up on the doorstep of The 146th Open venue and revealed that his dad still walks the family dog past the course every day. Having been used to sneaking on as a kid, he admits he cannot wait to tee-off on his home-town course as the country’s in-form golfer.

“It’s going to be an amazing experience from start to finish,” he said. “Whether I do well or not, I'm going to have a lot of people rooting for me and that's going to be lovely.”

The 26-year-old was ranked as low as 188 last year but after his performance at Erin Hills at the US Open and in Paris this weekend, he is expected to move into the world’s top-20 this week.

The 146th Open is on course to attract more than 200,000 fans to Royal Birkdale and Johnnie Cole Hamilton, the R&A’s Executive Director of Professional Championships, believes the Fleetwood-effect is having a massive impact on uptake from the local community and beyond.

“We are delighted that The 146th Open is the fastest-selling Championship to date and now that we are only a few weeks away, things are starting to really ramp-up as evidenced by this latest ticket category selling out” he said. “Tommy is a great ambassador for golf and his performances in recent months have really captured the imagination of local golf fans from Southport and across the whole country and beyond.

“It adds another dimension ahead of the one they all want to win and it is an event that no golf fan wants to miss.”
