Leigh Halfpenny needs to bring more to the British & Irish Lions than just his pinpoint kicking if the 2013 Player of the Series is to start at full-back this summer says two-time captain Martin Johnson.

Halfpenny scored 49 points for the Lions against Australia in the 2-1 series win four years ago and slotted all 18 of Wales’ points against France in the Six Nations on Saturday.

But the prolific nature of his scoring from the kicking tee, and experience of winning a Lions Test series, may not be enough to earn him a starting berth ahead of the in-form Stuart Hogg.

“I don’t think he’s a must go. You know what you’re getting with him with his boot, he’ll probably be a bit frustrated he hasn’t had much opportunity with ball in hand in his tournament,” said Johnson, who is an ambassador for British & Irish Lions Principal Partner Standard Life Investments.

“I think Stuart Hogg is the 15 that’s definitely on the pan e and the next guy is quite interesting. Rob Kearney has played well at times but do they want a bit more pace there.

“You’re going to score tries to win out in New Zealand.

“If they’re looking for some more attacking pace at full-back we could get a surprise, could they try moving Elliot Daly there, it’s very interesting.

“I think Halfpenny played very well and his kicking was certainly important but if you think Owen Farrell might be in the Test team you will need your best full-back.”

Alun Wyn Jones took over as captain of Wales at the start of the Six Nations but led his side to just two victories in their five games as they finished fifth.

And Johnson is confident the second row, who led the Lions in the Third Test in Australia, is the leading candidate for the tour captaincy but does not believe it will cost Warburton his squad place.

“Alun Wyn Jones will go for me and, for me, has his nose in front to be captain for the whole thing, I think he’s in the right time and playing well enough,” Johnson added.

“He doesn’t look tired like a guy who is hanging on, he looks like a guy who is out there and leading from the front. I think he’s a contender for me to be captain.”

“We know Sam has history, he’s been a Lions captain, he’s had numerous tests for Wales and all the rest of it, hopefully we can get fresh between now and the tour, not play too much rugby.”

“If you’re picking a guy like him at 6 he will do what he’s does, he’s a very establish international player.”
