Galal Yafai produced an explosive display to win his latest World Series of Boxing fight in double-quick time as the British Lionhearts secured victory over Morocco Atlas Lions.

Yafai underlined his status as one of the world’s emerging light flyweights as he unloaded a demolition job on Morocco’s Yassine Zaher - who looked dazed from the moment the first jab landed at London’s York Hall.

The 24-year old’s quick feet and quicker hands repeatedly found his inexperienced opponent wanting and exposed.

He twice sent him back on his heels in the opening round before the referee disqualified the Moroccan for repeatedly spitting out his mouth guard, less than three minutes into the bout.

“I felt strong in there and while he’s not the best in the world, I did what I had to,” said Yafai, who reached the last-16 on his Olympic debut in Rio.

“It was quick but I just was looking to stay composed because in my last fight I got a bit drawn into it.

“I would have liked more than a round but it looks good on television. I feel really strong in there and very relaxed and composed.

“When I went to the Olympics I’d had 29 fights and I was up against guys with 100 bouts guys under their belt. I’m still a novice but I’m learning really quickly. People are certainly starting to notice me.”

But Yafai, who beat Italy’s Federico Serra on points in his first World Series fight of the season last month, acknowledges tougher fights are ahead.

He will clash with Spain’s Samuel Carmona Heredia when the British Lionhearts take on the French Fighting Roosters in London next month - a fighter he beat to secure his Olympic qualifying place last year.

And then attentions will start to turn to the World Championships in Hamburg later this year.

“That’s going to be a tough fight and he’s going to be smarting over that one because I nicked a spot off him,” added Yafai.

“He’s a good fighter and it’s going to last much longer than a round but I’ve beat him before, so I can do it again.”

Yafai’s win gets the week off to the best possible start with older brother Gamal fighting Georgia’s Kvicha Gigolashvili on the undercard of this weekend’s WBA world super-welterweight fight between Jack Culcay and Demetrius Andrade in Germany.

The British Lionhearts were comfortable 5-0 winners of the five fight clash with the Morocco Atlas Lions but face tougher tests against teams from Italy and France in the next few weeks.
