Redcar Rugby Club U12s team captain Will Lund will be part of May’s Aviva Premiership Rugby Final at Twickenham after booking his spot at a festival organised by Newcastle Falcons at the weekend.

Lund received the opportunity after taking part in the Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup – a nationwide series for U11 and U12 teams – at the weekend at Kingston Park.

Launched during the 2008-09 season, the Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup is the first national grassroots tournament officiated by Premiership Rugby and run in conjunction with all 12 clubs.

Over 7,000 children take part in the competition each season, with two teams from each Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup getting the chance to go to the Aviva Premiership Rugby Final at Twickenham on 27 May.

Lund and Redcar U12s will be heading to Twickenham on May 27, where they will meet an England 2003 Rugby World Cup winner, join in a Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup Parade at half-time and hear which of them has won a club MVP award.

Redcar showed maturity beyond their years and played with a combination of brave tackling, crisp passes and slick off-loads.

The tournament was organized by Newcastle Falcons and in total more than 50 teams took part in the festival.

“I am psyched. We are so happy to get to go to Twickenham and see where England play and watch the final – it is going to be an amazing day,” said Will.

“Any of the teams could have gone and to be the team who has got the prize is just amazing.

“The quality of rugby was really high throughout the tournament and I think we played some of our best stuff.

“We rarely play some of the teams we played so it was great to do that and show of what we can do and learn from some of the others.

“I think Twickenham will be amazing and to be in front of so many teams and fans is going to be special.

“We will all be really proud and feel very lucky to be going. All of the teams at the festival were great and it makes it amazing.”

Joining Redcar at Twickenham will be Keswick U11s after they also earned the opportunity to take part in the Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup Parade.

“We are so excited to be there. I have wanted to go to Twickenham for as long as I can remember so it will be an amazing day out for us all,” said captain Ned Barnes.

“I thought we did well when we played. The results may not have gone our way on the day but we showed passion and we never gave up – which is what rugby is all about.

“We made sure we were prepared before arriving and our tackling was really good all day, so we can be pleased with that.

“We grew as a team throughout and I think it will only help us going forward to the next competition.

“Twickenham is going to be super awesome and I cannot wait to get there. It is a dream come true.

“It will be loud and big. I am excited.”

Falcons’ star Will Witty was also at Kingston Park to support and sign autographs, and admitted he would not be surprised if some of the youngsters on display joined him in the professional ranks.

“Every child benefits from getting the chance to play in a competition like this. Us as players benefit from the support they give us and the kids get to have a day out and play at a great club.

“It is great for their development and it takes me way back to when I was a kid playing in the same way and loving the game.

“I have been there before and the kids enjoy it, which is very important. We used to have festivals when I was young but nothing quite like this.

“It is great for the region too, it shows just how strong rugby is.”
