Wyatt Dundas and his Old Patesians RFC U12s team have secured a spot as part of the Aviva Premiership Rugby Final at Twickenham in May, after success at this weekend’s Gloucester Rugby leg of the Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup.

Old Patesians received the incredible prize after taking part in the Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup – a nationwide series for U11 and U12 teams – on Sunday at Dean Close School in Cheltenham.

Launched during the 2008-09 season, the Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup is the first national grassroots tournament officiated by Premiership Rugby and run in conjunction with all 12 clubs.

More than 7,000 children take part in the competition each season, with an U11 and U12 team from each Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup getting the chance to go to the Aviva Premiership Rugby Final at Twickenham on 27 May.

Gloucester Rugby centre Andy Symons attended to present the prizes and sign autographs and spoke about his memories of grassroots rugby: “It was a great day, the weather held off and there was a lot of talent on display.

“It took me back a long time to when I was playing in these tournaments myself. I remember them well, there was a few of us, I have two brothers and we were all there together.

“It was always a manic day but it was good times and they’re good memories. It’s where it all starts, I remember running around with friends and family, and I just grew to love the game which was great.”

Dundas and Old Patesians U12s will be heading to Twickenham on May 27, where they will meet an England 2003 Rugby World Cup winner, join in a Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup Parade at half-time, and hear which of them has won a club MVP award.

Old Patesians started in a pool with Stroud, Cinderford and Ledbury on Sunday morning before coming through a second group stage against Cheltenham, Cirencester and Minchinhampton.

The tournament was organised by Gloucester Rugby and Old Patesians were one of more than 30 teams that took part in the festival.

“It feels really great to be on the winning team and to be able to run out at Twickenham. It’s going to be a great experience,” said 12-year-old Dundas.

“We played really well and we are very happy that we have got this opportunity.

“We won two and drew one and it’s been really good and we’ve played some good rugby. It’s been a good day.

“I think our handling out wide was very good, we spread the ball wide and scored some tries in the corners which won us a few games.

“I’ve been playing since I was nine and I love the physical side of it, the tackling and the mauling and things like that.”

Joining Old Patesians at Rugby HQ will be Tewkesbury RFC after they also earned the opportunity to take part in the Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup Parade.

Tewkesbury were paired in a pool with St Brendan’s RFC, Painswick and Drybook before facing Minchinhampton, Old Patesians Reds, and Widden OB.

“It feels very good to know we’re going to Twickenham, it’s a massive stadium with huge crowds,” said Tewkesbury U11s player Alisdair May

“It’s mind-blowing that we’re going to the Aviva Premiership Rugby final, I can’t believe we got picked.

“The rugby’s been really good, some of the teams were really hard but we enjoyed it. We worked as a team well, near the end we worked out where we were all playing.

“I’ve been playing rugby for about four years and I like getting the ball and tackling.”
