She may have missed the event last year through injury, but Richmond skier Honor Clissold is aiming to match her title-winning performances from past years at the English Alpine Championships.

Clissold, 19, will be racing all possible disciplines at the Bormio event, and after winning the Super G in 2015, she wants to get back to winning ways this season.

The English Alpine Championships are a week of national-level racing and skiing camaraderie, featuring the best English skiers in the country, ranging from under-10s up to senior athletes.

Now a full-time skier, Clissold missed both the English and British Championships last season, but was selected to go to the World Junior Championships and is confident her injury is behind her and she is ready to perform to her best once again.

“I’m fully fixed now, it was quite a complicated injury, it was something to do with my arm - a fluid injury,” said the former Richmond School pupil.

“It wasn’t too bad, just a couple of months out, it just happened to be the worst timing, beginning of February.

“It makes you that bit more hungry to come back this year and do well, having missed out last year.

“I’ve got no specific goals this year, but just to get lower FIS points and hopefully win a few titles at the English and British Champs.”

From February 11-17, 350 of the best English alpine skiers will descend on Bormio, Italy for the 21st English Alpine Championships, organised by national governing body Snowsport England.

The English Alpine Championships continue to feature the rising stars of Alpine skiing in England, previously acting as a platform for the likes of Chemmy Alcott and Dave Ryding.

And with Clissold having made the jump from school pupil to full-time athlete – staying at the Team Evolution training base in Austria – she hopes to improve her all-round strengths in the hope of emulating those illustrious names that have gone before her.

“Being full-time is pretty hard, especially mentally, because you don’t get as many breaks, you don’t go home as much,” she admitted.

“In Bormio I’ll do all of the races. I’ve not done any speed races this season but I think there’s a Super G and Super Combined, so I’ll do them all.

“Speed is not my strong point, Giant Slalom is normally my preferred discipline, so hopefully a title there is not out of the question and would be nice.

“I’ve had a few wins in the GS before. In the 2015 British I won the Super G, I’d had quite a lot of falls that year but I actually did alright in the speed events.”
