Harlequins hooker Dave Ward has said it would be “something special” if he made his 100th appearance for the club on Sunday.

Ward, 31, is in the squad for the Aviva Premiership Rugby trip to Newcastle Falcons, and is on 99 appearances in all competitions so far.

The forward joined Harlequins in 2012 from Cornish Pirates, having had spells at Northampton Saints and Sale Sharks after coming through the ranks at Bath Rugby.

And he will be looking to help Harlequins kick on from last Sunday, after they battled to an impressive 21-20 win over third-placed Bath at Twickenham Stoop.

But despite the milestone, Ward insists his sole focus is on doing everything he can to help his side get the better of their north east rivals.

“To go down on the board as having played 100 games for Harlequins is so special,” Ward said.

“However, I won’t be thinking about the 100th appearance when I come on, if I come on, I’ll be thinking how I can contribute to us winning the game.

“Due to the nature of the two teams and the conditions, we’re expecting to see a game of good, expansive rugby.

“We’ve got a long train back from Newcastle after the game – I think I’ll enjoy that if we win!

“We’re more than just team mates here. These are the guys who will all be at my wedding if I ever get married.

“The club just doesn’t sign players, they sign Harlequins players.”

This week, Harlequins, who are sixth in Aviva Premiership Rugby, signed 20-year-old Samoan international hooker Elia Elia, adding to competition for places in the front line.

Ward has been impressed by what he has seen of the youngster in training, and believes the competition for places will push the squad onto better things.

“He certainly brings that physicality, he’s a strong guy who is very good on the ball,” Ward said.

“He also brings that competition for places and it creates the environment where everyone is pushing for a place.

“He will be pushing the likes of me, Joe Gray and Rob Buchanan for a place in the team.

“We had one of our best training sessions on Wednesday, and that can only be a good thing.”
