Gaz Choudhry admits the frustration of London 2012 is fuelling his quest for an Paralympic medal but the wheelchair basketball star knows how tough a task he faces in Rio.

The Ealing-based 31-year-old – who plays his club basketball in Italy – is a key member of the 12-strong squad that will head to Brazil desperate to make up for the heartbreak of four years ago.

There Choudhry and the ParalympicsGB squad missed out on a medal after defeat to USA in the bronze medal match.

Fourth is the worse place to finish at a Paralympics but the squad – who are two-time defending European champions – are ready to set the record straight.

“I remember the parade vividly – I didn’t want to be there. Finishing in fourth was tough,” he said.

“But in hindsight that was a special moment and it sticks out for me. It’s moments like that put our sport into perspective.

“It is just about the pursuit of trying to get that medal we missed in London. That absolutely fuels you.

“You don’t ever want to make those mistakes again. We don’t want any what-if moments.

“Until we won the European championship in Frankfurt in 2013 – we were very angry.

“That team that won the European Champs in Frankfurt was really special, it was very emotional when we won that.”

While confidence is high in the squad – the level of competition continues to improve in one of the flagship Paralympic sports.

No longer can you guarantee that USA, Canada and Australia will be battling it out for the medals – according to Choudhry. “The big difference in our sport now is that the average player is so much better, improved training, improve equipment and everything else has made a real difference," he added.

“The special players are still special but it is the average player that has improved.

“In Rio I think there are probably five teams that can win the gold and seven that could win a medal – that has never been the case before.

“I think GB are in the five – it is so competitive though.

“For us we have to just focus on making the quarter-finals – once we have managed that then there is three do-or-die matches.

“Making the quarter final is the key and anything after that we will have to see.”
