He may have “thrown away” a memorable win in dramatic fashion but Huddersfield’s Jon Fairley loved every minute of his Silverstone Classic experience at the weekend.

The 42-year-old competed in several races during the world's biggest motor racing event at the weekend, which took place between Friday and Sunday at the home of British racing.

And Fairley was set for victory in the Maserati Trophy for HGPCA Pre '66 Grand Prix Cars race on Saturday until he spun out on one of the final corners, handing the win to Will Nuthall.

Fairley said: “This is big race of the year for us and we compete pretty much every month throughout the summer and this is the biggest event.

“Will had a problem and his car cut out so I managed to nip by and had a couple of laps in the lead, built a bit of a gap and wasn’t under too much pressure but I threw it away. I got a bit tail happy and managed to catch it back but threw the lead away with about three corners to go.

“But I had won the last four races and despite throwing it away this weekend, I have had a good season so far.

“The Silverstone Classic is absolutely fabulous. Everywhere in Silverstone there is something to see and something to do. There are fascinating cars and it is absolutely superb: it really is a superb event to be competing in.

“All the guests I know who come here love it as well and it is the highlight of the year for our racing calendar.”

The Silverstone Classic sees more than 100,000 motorsport enthusiasts descend on the iconic track over the weekend.

The 10,000-plus vehicles on show include some of the most sought-after and instantly recognisable cars in the history of motorsport, while there are also free fairground rides and other attractions on offer to thrill the whole family.

For Fairley, racing cars is a big part of his life but he is fortunate to have an understanding boss.

He said: “We race pretty much every month throughout the summer, sometimes twice.

“I am a construction director building all over the UK and I spend most of my time travelling around the country looking at construction projects - towing a trailer with a car in the back of it!

“I have a very understanding managing director who is here today supporting me. The work-racing balance sees the laptop go everywhere I go and in-between racing I spend most of my time working.

“It is a hard balance at times but they make quite nice offices!”

Silverstone Classic is the world’s biggest classic motor racing festival and provides flat out family fun. The weekend event features over 1,000 race entries and 10,000 classic cars on display, drawing in 100,000 classic motorsport enthusiasts and their families.
