Saracens star Marcelo Bosch is the foundation on which Argentina’s World Cup progress can be built, according to their all-time leading points scorer.

Los Pumas lost their opening match of Pool C to New Zealand but gave the All Blacks plenty to think about in the 26-16 defeat.

Next up for the South Americans is a clash with Georgia on Friday with Namibia and Tonga also still to come.

Former Leinster man Felipe Contepomi believes his side have a brilliant opportunity to progress from the pool and says his country has plenty of young talent at its disposal.

But he also believes that, when the chips are down, experience is key and says that Bosch, a Premiership winner with Saracens last season, is the man that can bring calm to the storm.

“People like Bosch are the rock, the foundation from which the rest of the team is built and can develop,” he said.

“If you want to see them go far then you need people like him to be there guiding the team and helping them through the difficult moments.

“The other players add the flavour to the match but he is the one that builds the foundations and helps us to succeed.

“When you have players like that it is a big help because he is the one with the calm head and can bring the tranquillity when the water is boiling.

“He is a very complete player and playing in the Saracens means he knows how to succeed at the highest level.”

While many will be expecting Argentina to see off the remaining challenges in the Pool Contepomi believes that Japan’s victory over South Africa shows that anything is possible and has called for focus from his former teammates.

“For us it a great opportunity to show the world how far Argentina has come and what we are doing to grow as a team,” he added.

“We have earned the right to play against the best teams of the world and being able to play the likes of New Zealand is amazing.

“Winning against New Zealand would always have been a surprise but I think we can look at the next games and think we can win them.

“For Argentina it is a tricky pool that on paper might look easy but I think you saw from the Japan game that anyone can beat anyone at this World Cup.

“So we know that Georgia will be a tough game and that we will need to be playing our best if we want to win it.”
