Lee-Valley based paddler Greg Pitt might not have had the greatest season so far but he remains confident that his Olympic dream is on course.

The 26-year-old has been named along with C2 partner Adam Burgess as part of this year’s Great Britain squad for the Canoe Slalom World Championships in London in September.

The pair are in illustrious company with London 2012 silver medallists David Florence and Richard Hounslow getting nod, as do Olympic champion Etienne Stott and new partner Mark Proctor.

Pitt and Burgess have two points to their name from the World Cup so far this season and currently sit 47th in the overall rankings.

But Pitt is confident they have the ability to turn in stronger performances as the season wears on and is optimistic about what the next 12 months have in store.

“The season has not been as good as we had hoped for if I am honest,” said Pitt, who paddles for Stafford and Stone Canoe Club . “But I know we are capable of more and have the ability to medal at those events and we are always aiming for top-ten finishes.

“From there anything is possible but we have definitely had our ups and downs so far this season and we certainly want to start having more ups.

“Unfortunately injury stopped us from competing at the last World Cup but we are back on top of our training now and looking forward to the rest of the season.

“In the next two rounds of the World Cup we will definitely be pushing for the top ten to get into the finals and then see where it goes from there.”

While Pitt says strong World Cup performances are important to the pair he insists the World Championships and next summer’s Olympics are the highest priorities and is looking to peak at just the right time.

“Being with Adam is great. He is really easy to work with, we share the same goals and we both have a similar paddling style,” he added.

“Everything is built up for the World Championships and Olympic selections so we use the World Cups for mainly training and experience and we are looking to get the best out of it as possible and try to peak for the Worlds and Olympic selection.

“The season so far has slightly been below our expectations but we are definitely capable and we are looking to perform well in the next couple of races and then go from there.

“It would be nice to better that and finish in the top three on the podium but we will have to wait to see what happens.”
