Kelly Smith admitted she is getting a “bit sick” of a “two-year cycle of disappointment” after Team GB were knocked out of the Olympic Games by Canada at the City of Coventry Stadium last night.
Hopes of a medal had increased following Hope Powell’s side’s 1-0 victory over Brazil that saw them top their group, but goals from Jonelle Filigno and Christine Sinclair secured a 2-0 victory and sent the Canadians through to a semi-final against reigning champions USA.
The Watford-born striker, who plays for Boreham Wood-based Arsenal Ladies, was not involved last night after picking up an injury against Brazil but she said: "We didn't accomplish what we set out to.
"We've inspired a lot of people which is absolutely great, and will hopefully take the game on another level and get more people to come on and watch us play.
"But we didn't get a medal. We fell short.
"It's a two-year cycle of disappointment. I'm getting a bit sick of it. We always get to this stage and then let ourselves down. I'm just so disappointed."
