IN THE heat of battle of the by-election, Monster Raving Loony Party candidate, John Cartwright, still managed to put a call into a late night radio chat show.
Mr Cartwright has gained notoriety over the years as 'John of Croydon', one of the clutch of eccentrics - which used to include the likes of Peter Cook posing as 'Sven from Sweden' - featured on LBC's Clive Bull Show.
His preferred style is to call the presenter and say: "Globule", before hanging up. Last night, however, the veteran candidate was more expansive.
"I've never been in a by-election with so many candidates, which means I may come 12th, which I've never done before."
He explained that he was only standing in Ealing-Southall because party leader Alan 'Howling Laud' Hope, was fighting Tony Blair's former constituency of Sedgefield in County Durham.
But coming last looked less likely for Mr Cartwright, his party's shadow minister for chocolate, as time wore on.
"This time, though, some of the other candidates have decided they don't want to be candidates and have told people to vote for the other parties, so this time I might even come ninth."
He did.
