Lack of respect

3:32pm Monday 1st October 2001

A UNION flag flying at half mast was stolen from outside Orpington's Royal British Legion.

Theft of the flag, raised as a mark of respect after the American terror attacks, has left members fuming.

Former club secretary Stanley Wright said: “It is absolutely despicable. Whoever did this must have no regard whatsoever for the victims of this tragedy.

“Regardless of nationality, they were human beings who were killed in the attacks.”

The teenage thief struck some time between 2pm and 2.30pm on Wednesday, September 19, as about a dozen members sat inside in the club. The youth, wearing a yellow anorak, was spotted taking the 6ft by 3ft flag before heading off towards the High Street.

Club chairman Geoff Haisell, who has recently received a long service award, said: “This is a horrific crime, especially at a time like this.

“It is a time of great mourning and compassion. Families in this country are just trying to pay their respects as best they can.”

The flag is only flown on special occasions such as the Queen's birthday and national ceremonies.

The incident was reported to two police officers who were passing at the time and is being investigated.
