FOUR schools have gone top of the class in an official government report published this week.

Greenfields Children's Centre and Grove House Children's Centre, which are both nurseries in Southall, and Berrymede Junior School in Acton, have all been given outstanding praise in the chief inspector of schools' annual report 2003/04.

David Bell, The Queen's chief inspector of schools, said: "I heartily congratulate the headteachers, staff, governors and pupils of all the successful schools and colleges named in my annual report on their success and hard work in delivering such a high standard of education."

All three schools were commended for doing outstandingly well on virtually all fronts or as having achieved against the odds.

Perivale Primary was also praised for the significant improvements it has made which allowed it to be removed from special measures.

Debbie Hope, headteacher of Perivale Primary, feels the school's change of fortunes has come about thanks to a real sense of team spirit.

She said: "Perivale has had its problems in the past but I have been lucky to join a team of hard-working and dedicated staff who go out of their way to ensure that all our pupils achieve their potential."

Cllr Sonika Nirwal, cabinet member for developing young people, gave particular praise to the two nurseries who did well.

She said: "All our schools are working really hard across the borough to raise standards and it's great news that four have been singled out for praise in this report.

"It's particularly nice to see our nurseries do well as Ealing believes in giving children the best possible start in education and encouraging success from an early age."

June McHugh, headteacher of Greenfields Children's Centre, was delighted her nursery has been praised.

She said: "It's great to receive this praise which recognises all the hard work that has made Greenfields an excellent nursery."
