MP against gambling bill
THE Ealing North MP has vowed to vote against changes to the current Gambling Bill unless more concessions are made by the government.
Stephen Pound MP believes the current gambling laws which are in place are sufficient for the UK and does not want to see changes in the bill which could allow for Las Vegas-style super casinos to be introduced.
He told the Times: "No-one has ever come up to me on Greenford Broadway and said that what this area really needs is a local Las Vegas, but the Government seems to believe that MPs are crying out for a constituency Caesar's Palace to "regenerate" the area.
"We have a system that works and if it's not broken let's not try to fix it.
"Unless I see more concessions from the Government I'll be voting against at the third reading."
Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell is proposing changes to the Gambling Bill which would allow huge Las Vegas-style casinos, open 24-hours-a-day with hundreds of slot machines paying out unlimited prizes.
However, she also says 90 per cent of the bill is about tougher regulation, such as the creation of a Gambling Commission to supervise the industry.
