Top cop sets priorities

THE top policeman in Ealing has set clamping down on burglary and violent crime as his top priorities for this year.
Chief Superintendent Sultan Taylor, the borough commander, also commented for the first time on the annual crime figures, which showed a seven per cent reduction in the number of crimes committed in Ealing.
Mr Taylor was unable to make an official comment when the figures were first published because of restrictions posed by the London elections held last week.
The crime statistics, released a fortnight ago, showed burglary in the borough had increased by seven per cent, and there were 21 incidents of violence against the person every day.
He said: "The figures for crime in Ealing will always be high comparatively because it is the third most populated borough in London.
"Burglary still remains an issue, but we have had quite a number of good successes in catching offenders in recent weeks. We will be working in partnership with the community to try and reduce burglary in the coming years, that is one of my priorities.
"Reducing serious violent crime is another local target and, in particular, reduce the amount of violent youth crime."
Mr Taylor also said he will continue to push for tougher sentences for crimes such as burglary and offered praise to his officers for their achievements in reducing vehicle crime by 20 per cent and personal robbery by 36 per cent.
He also took the chance to welcome new Mayor of London Boris Johnson, and said: "I'm looking at the change positively. I am optimistic the borough's partnership work will be recognised and rewarded."
Figures released for last month show a 20 per cent increase in residential burglary on April 2007, a 40 per cent reduction in motor vehicle crime and an 11 per cent reduction in knife-enabled crime.
