A GRANDMOTHER has been killed exactly three weeks after a five-year-old girl was seriously injured on the same notorious Acton road.

Rose Cleary, 72, was killed when she was hit by a car outside her house in North Acton Road just before 9am on Saturday morning, November 17.

Rose was crossing the road to buy a paper from the local shop.

Floral tributes from friends and family have been left at the scene to pay tribute to a popular neighbour who had lived in the same house for more than 45 years.

The crash happened just 100 yards from the zebra crossing where five-year-old Rachel Popoola was left for dead by a hit-and-run driver, as she crossed the road with her brother to play in the park.

Residents on the road are now calling on Ealing Council to take urgent action to prevent more deaths on the stretch which links two busy industrial estates.

Estella O'Brien, who has had a house in the area for 20 years and is a member of the Wesley Estate Residents' Association, said: "Rose was a really lovely woman, she did not deserve this at all.

"Residents are in shock and many people are very distressed by these accidents, especially as they have come so close together.

"Parents are scared to take their children to the park or use the crossings as no-one stops for them.

"We need to fight to make sure we get something done about this road by the council as it is becoming more and more dangerous."

Meetings to discuss the safety of the road have been ongoing since 2004, when 42-year-old Maria Kishak, a Ukrainian woman, was killed on the same crossing as Rachel.

A new bus station is also due to be built in nearby Cunard Road, which will increase traffic flow along North Acton Road, after councillors gave it the go-ahead two weeks ago.

Mrs O'Brien said: "What we want is the traffic that speeds up and down this road all day calmed completely.

"The new bus station can only be accessed by coming along North Acton Road, so we will now have even more dangerous traffic in the area.

"We need traffic lights put on the roundabouts at the end of the road, and for this stretch to be made a one way road so traffic has to use Park Royal Road instead.

"Because we are at the edge of the borough we do feel marginalised, and the needs of people on this estate are completely ignored.

"Over the years councils have sold off the fields and community centre to make way for industry, and then they turn round to us and say there's nothing they can do as we live on an industrial estate."

A petition calling for immediate action over North Acton Road was presented at a meeting of the Acton Area Committee on Wednesday evening.

  • A man who was driving a silver Mercedes SL60 sports car stopped at the scene of the accident.

He was arrested and has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

this road has become increasingly dangerous since this council made road changes by the westen aveue and carphone warehouse. before this you would come of the wetern avenue and signs drected you down park royal road, and around by north aton station so the traffic stuc to these road, however now it is badly signposted and car are coming through chase road, residents have been asking for years to safer road there. there is a park across north aton road, and the council have put in a zebra crossng right at the bottm of it, however the local bus stop is up by where rose cleary was killed yet there is no where to cross safely. even beside rose cleary houe isa walkway for residents to walk through to rech north acton road and the pavement is even lowered right beside her home as a access t cross the road,. this is absolutely disguising and its abut time the council addressed this issue and make it one way comng up from acton lane. they also need to have a look at their roundabout by standard road, which is a blind corner onto chase road/ north acton road.

my mum did not deserve to be killed right ouside her home, she crossed this road for over 40 years every morning to get the paper in the shop right opposite her house. This driver was speeding on a residential road, which already has speed problems, coming from the zebra crossing where a 5 years old grl was left for dead only 5 weeks ago, in a hit and run, The council has yet to make this road safe in over 10 years, and i believe is a thorn in their side. The council really needs to ook at the bigger picture when they agree to planning permssion. The traffic on the road had quadrupled since they changed the layout of the road up by wales farm road, and due to bad signage coming of the western ave, the traffic no longer goes down park royal road, which is a main road, but seems to be directed into chase road/north acton road, i beleve this is where to problems originate, and that is where it needs to be addressed. Why is there no crossing or island for crossing up my mums end of the road, by the bus stop for children and elderly.?? Secondly did they even consider the residents on north acton road, when they agreed to a bus terminal in cunard road, which again is going to increase even more dangerous drivers and more traffic into a residental road, by giving them the green light. I beleive the council is turning a blind eye to the forgotten estate, and hoping the problems here will go away.
so come on council you explain to me why my mother is dead.!!

rosemarie cleary and the rest of her family have my deepest sympathies. I agree with all she has said. And second her call to Ealing Council.

The residents assocation are trying very hard to get some sort of traffic calming measures on north acton road after Roses tragic death perhapes we will have more success. It would be nice if Rose did not die in vein.

My deepest condolences to the family of Rose Clery.
This is not a new problem at all. I've been living in Wesley Avenue for 30 years and there has always been some sort of problem with either North Acton Road or the Zebra crossing on it. The various industrial commuters that use North Acton Road, see a fairly straight piece of road and then they their drive as fast as possible. They really fly down that road. Although, it is not just limited to North Acton Road. The residents of Wesley Avenue, Harold Road and Newark Crescent are well accustomed to having large vans and cars speeding up their roads too.

Speed humps must be placed on North Acton Road. Road Signage must be better at the A40 turn off/Wales Farm Road, so that industrial traffic uses Park Royal Road, where there are fewer residential houses, or even detour them down Standard Road where there are none.

I do not agree with having more traffic lights on North Acton Road because in my driving experience Traffic Lights only cause traffic to build up and do not help it at all. Furthermore, people become frustrated with Traffic Lights, try to find a shortcut, then they speed up to catch lost time and it's at this point that the accidents occur.

Things must change fast. Two deaths and one child seriously injuried in the space of 3 years is not good for our local community.
