Library suffers setback

A TWO million pound refurbishment of Ealing central library has had to be halted because of structural problems discovered in the building.

The library closed on April 22 while the council undertook the Libraries for the 21st Century programme to improve services and was due to reopen in January 2008, although the delays have meant that may well have to be pushed back.

A spokesman for the council said: "When we started to remove stock a number of problem areas were identified and it became clear that a detailed investigation of the building would need to be done.

"The outcome of this investigation will determine the new time frame for the refurbishment works.

"We understand the frustration of library users and apologise for the delay but it is essential that we have a safe and high-quality library service.

"We ask for residents to bear with us while we resolve the problems."

A new temporary library has been opened in the town hall annexe, but retired Ealing librarian Peter Ludbrook fears the revamped facilities may not be enough to bring back the lost trade.

Mr Ludbrook said: "Public libraries are facing big problems these days and the challenge is that people will get used to going to other places for these services.

"There is no doubt that the library was in need of this refurbishment, but with two others shut in the borough at the same time it will be hard to attract the business back.

"I have also heard that they are having to delay the refurbishment of West Ealing library until they know the extent of the problems at the central library. "

Northfields library, one of those that has been shut for renovation, is due to reopen next Tuesday, July 31, which will alleviate some pressures on the other facilities in the borough.

Events at the re-launch include a speech from the mayor as well as many other events including a harp recital by Kate Smith and events for children.
