EALING Council is being urged to go green by considering a CO2 based parking scheme in the borough.
Darren Johnson, a Green Party member of the London Assembly has called for the action against people using gas guzzling 4x4 vehicles.
In the first five months of this year, sales for such cars have fallen seven per cent in London, compared with the nationwide slump in sales of five per cent.
Mr Johnson, said: "These figures show that measures against gas guzzling 4x4's work. It is therefore encouraging that since Richmond Council adopted a CO2 parking scheme earlier this year, ten other councils have enforced or proposed similar schemes."
The £25 congestion charge in the capital seems to have a link with the faster fall in sales together with the moves by local authorities such as Richmond and Haringey to adopt differential parking rates based on vehicle emmisions.
Mr Johnson, added: "However, London councils not yet looking into CO2 based parking schemes should aim to do so to reinforce the message that Londonders can save themselves money and help save the planet by driving a less polluting vehicle.
"People need to think carefully about the cars they are buying."
