THE ONE London Party has accused Mayor of London Ken Livingstone of insulting the English majority in London by deciding to celebrate' St George's Day with a screening of Monty Python's Holy Grail in Trafalgar Square.

The party also called on the Mayor to support the campaign for greater public recognition of St George's Day.

The Mayor also announced today that there would be an attempt to break the world record for the largest coconut orchestra' led by the cast of the musical Spamalot.

Damian Hockney, leader of the One London Party, said: "The Mayor has consistently avoided celebrating the majority English culture of London.

"At first he claimed there was no call for it, then when it became clear there was a huge and growing call for it, he claimed it was unnecessary because there was no tradition of St George's Day celebrations.

"Neither is there a tradition of a Caribbean Showcase or a Russian Winter Festival, but that hasn't stopped him organising and promoting them."

He added: "Now that he has been reluctantly forced to acknowledge the presence of the English, he has done it in the most bland, insulting way possible - by ignoring the rich indigenous traditions of London and England and instead focussing on the vague, generic notion of English humour'.

"Will he be screening episodes of Father Ted' at the annual St Patrick's Day festival, or showing Bruce Lee films during the Chinese New Year celebrations?"

Surely Monty Python celebrates English Humour at it's highest and the Joke is therefore on Ken. Us English love Jokes. Hockney needs to get a life!! It just shows how artificial some celebration's are. What about Father Ted which shows with Monty Python the great Anglo-Irish relationship based on Laughter!!! Father Ted and Fawlty Towers are 2 of the top shows ever. So let us have a laugh rather than an Artificial Parade that just celebrate's American notions of Irishness or Englishness. Maybe on St Andrew's Day we can have Rab C Nesbit!!

Amazing really, that people expect anything else from livingstone;a man who sought to entertain irish terrorists at westminster not so long ago amongst other enemies of England.Hes hardly going to encourage the celebration of anything English is he?He was certainly a fish out of water at the England rugby world cup winners home coming celebrations in london his face was a joy to see amongst all those English flags.roll on an English parliament.

I think some of you miss the point. Monty Python IS a celebration of English humour...but that's all Red Ken would do - no celebration of history, achievement or English greats...just a film. Although Ken is quite able to fall over himself for the Irish. Hypocracy is what it is.

Chris from Harrow - I do hope you're being sarcastic.

All these people who think we shouldn't celebrate St. George's Day because "He doesn't exist" or "He wasn't English! Father Christmas doesn't exist and no-one with a brain cell ever thought St. George was English. Get a life, and let those of us who belive in having fun have some!!!!

Chris is bang on the money! How many pure breed english men are there in this country? Not even pure breed just straight english blood line in the past say, 200 years. Would make a great survey! Why now the great concern about celebrating St Georges day. I think that there is an embarressment issue here as to the fact that it has been overlooked for all these years and no one was ever really bothered.... until now. How can Ireland manage to give a days holiday on St Patricks day? If England were to do the same maybe it would be taken a bit more seriously! God bless the Queen and all her german ancestors! Stick that in your pipe / bong and smoke it!
