Women-only Labour shortlist

MEN will not be able to stand for Southall's parliamentary seat, it was confirmed on Tuesday, prompting a major row within the Labour party.

The decision, following current Southall MP Piara Khabra's decision to step down, was agreed at a meeting of Labour's National Executive Committee on Tuesday night.

Cllr Gurcharan Singh, who would have contended the spot in an open fight, has slammed fellow party members for vindictively conspiring against him.

Cllr Singh, (Lab, Lady Margaret), said: "The real reason for this is Mr Khabra and my opponent, Vivendra Sharma, came to the conclusion that they can't beat me fair and square.

"They convinced people that we should have an all-women shortlist. Now there is no way I can take part - short of getting a sex change.

"He realised he could not beat me so now he is saying: If I'm not getting it then you're not having it either.' I wasn't expecting it and I'm disappointed that the Labour party would aspire to make a decision like this.

"The representation of one group should not be at the expense of another - they should have men and women."

Cllr Singh told the Ealing Times he will do everything in his power to fight the decision.

Councillor Sharma (Lab, Norwood Green) responded, saying: "I'm surprised he thinks I've got that much power. Councillor Singh's comments are childish."

Mr Khabra, 82, is delighted with the decision - and says if Southall's male politicos want to get into parliament they will have to go elsewhere.

"Even if a person thinks they have a right to be a candidate then this is not the only constituency," he said. "There are a number of women who have been in contact with me who live in the area, who were brought up in the area. Any male person has the chance to be selected somewhere else.

"Councillors should not be slinging mud over other people over this."

Labour leader Sonika Nirwal and councillor Jasbir Anand have both expressed interest in the seat for the next general election.

Cllr Anand (Lab, Southall Green) said: "I think the party had to make a decision and they have done that - I hope that everyone will rally around the person who gets selected to the constituency.

"It is not taking anything away from the men. It is a decision that there should be more women represented.

"It is encouraging that more women will be able to come forward and will be encouraged to take a more active role in politics through this."

And Cllr Nirwal said: "I'm very happy that the decison has been made and the party has upheld its national policy.

"I recognise the concerns of some of the other councillors but now a decision has been made and it's time for us to move on for the benefit of the party."

Deputy leader of the Ealing Labour Party Cllr Ranjit Dheer (Lab, Dormer's Well) said what the party needs to do is rally together to make sure the Tories don't take the seat.

"We've had a good argument," he said. "And it was an argument that needed to be held in public.

"Now we should unite behind whoever becomes the labour candidate and do what we can to make sure the Tories don't get in."

If either councillors Anand of Nirwal become the member of Parliament they will be the first Asian female to sit in the House of Commons.

Great news - this can only be good news for democracy and for the Labour Party

It happened down here and what did we get a Blair-rite who does not answer letters chases the camera and has done nothing to help us, I do not care if they pick men or women they should be good at the job otherwise people vote with their feet, like myself not going to vote anymore

Democracy! - how on earth can this be good for democracy, its as dictatorship!

Its the persons personality and talent that count, not what sex they are!

We do not need women only alternatives to get women sitting in our parliement.

If Mrs Thatcher could become the first female PM without their being a women only candidate list, then surely the Labour Party can do without this politicaly correct nonsence.

I don't want to get involved in internal Labour politics but would like to make just one correction. Cllr Dheer said that the disunity in Labour could let the Tories in - in fact the Lib Dems gained second place in Ealing Southall in the last general election and so are the party poised to benefit from Labour splits!

Thats Rubbish! - and what about the local elections last year? - the tories thrashed you in Southall, with them getting over 1000 votes in Southall Broadway ward alone (was around 100 at the 2002 election)

face it, the libdems 2nd place in 05 was a one off simply because of the Iraq war, I very much doubt this will be the case come the next General Election.

More discrimination masquerading as political correctness. Let's have a shortlist of white disabled men for Ealing so we can get David Blunkett in.

Good god - when will people realise that these shortlists are designed to force a Blairite toady onto a community, they're nothing to do with getting equal representation. Vivendra Sharma? Who she? Councillor for West Norwood, eh? What part of Ealing is that then? I can remember when MPs used to be selected from, and representatives for, a constituency - now we get whoever Blair's advisors think is least likely to stand up to them.

Come on Greens, give us a good candidate and you can have my vote. Labour can get stuffed.

This decision is bad for women, democracy and this constituency. Hope the Labour Party gets a bloody nose at the next election. Piara Khabra has not only secured his name in history as the most lame MP but also the most selfish.

What can I say!

The Conservatives have had “All-Male” short lists for a long time. It is what is known as the Masons (try the South Ealing Conservative Club where there is a Masonic Temple upstairs; and every member Mason is required to be a member of the Conservative Association, etc.). SO why shouldn’t Labour have all-Women shortlists; it would seem that there is some balance here.

Eric.

P.S. Perhaps Dominic Moore-Bridger could hang out with his video camera and see who goes in and out on Masonic meeting nights and see which local politicos go in and out!

Southall will suffer for this. We are removing ourselves from the basic principles of democracy and as a result it is the constituents who are losing out.

There should be no shortlist of any type. The candidacy should go to the best man or woman regardless of background for the role.

However, every cloud does have silver lining - at least the old foggie Khabra will be out... what has he actually done for Southall in his years as MP - don't all jump in at once now!

The idea that all masons must be conservatives is the silliest thing I've heard. As a senior Freemason I can assure 'Eric' That Masons are required to hold their own political opinions and told never to promote them in any lodge on penalty of exclusion if they persist. It is true that some Conservative politicians have been masons, but so have senior Labour and Liberal ones!!
