RETIRING MP Piara Khabra has pledged support to controversial plans to have an all-women shortlist for his Southall seat at the next General Election.

The 82-year-old member of parliament said opponents should "give up their selfish interests" and support the move.

He said: "For me, it is important. People with common sense should be prepared to sacrifice. We need to have more Asian women in the House of Commons - currently there are three black women only."

The oldest-serving MP, who will step down at the next election after 15 years in the post, said it was a question of women's rights, and "essential to redress the balance".

"Women have been discriminated against for two long," he continued. "It is being addressed by all the parties - they have every right to be treated equally. We must address this issue."

Current leader of the Labour group Sonika Nirwal is one possible contender for the seat, as is Southall Green councillor Jasbir Anand.

Mr Khabra said the shortlist would be a good way to ensure greater equality in the community.

He said: "If there was open selection the reality on the ground is, because of male chauvinism, it would not work."

But the plans have been met with outrage by some party members who have sent a petition of more than 900 names to Labour's National Executive Committee, the body which has the final decision.

The fears come after a meeting last Tuesday when no outcome was reached.

And insiders say the move could even lead to the party losing the traditionally super-safe Labour seat.

One party source, who did not want to be named, told the Ealing Times an all-women shortlist would be "disastrous".

"There is no woman who is a strong enough candidate who could win the election because it is an Asian dominated seat - they have no footing in Southall.

"If the Tories put in a strong candidate Labour would lose. It is bad for Southall.

"There should be an open selection so everybody has a chance, not just women."

But Mr Khabra angrilly dismissed the claims, saying: "They are talking rubbish.

"Women have been elected by voters at the local elections in Southall, and they are the same people who would vote for them in the parliamentary election. There is no difference. The gap has to be addressed."

A decision whether to force through a women-only shortlist will now be made by the NEC on March 13.

In the last century women have led three of the main South Asian countries:

Sirimavo Bandaranaike, Sri Lanka
Indira Gandhi, India
Benazir Bhutto, Pakistan

Surely a woman can be Southall's Labour candidate?

Both men and women are equally talented in ealing Southall labour Party. let the Labour Party members of this CLP decide whether they want man or women for MP in an open selection.
Cllr jasbir Anand and other labour members of her family have signed a petition in favour of open selection.

Mr Piara Khabra support for all woman selection is hypocritical. All woman selection will deprive 50% of the population from participating in the selection process, which is not only gender discrimination but also a hindrance to the participation of most popular, experienced and winnable candidates.

If he is sure that the names proposed by him are likely to win let them compete in an open selection process that has the support of majority of the Southall Councillors and Labour members.

The imposition of woman only selection in the last general election lost the safe seat for Labour, which had a majority of 19000.

Therefore it is essential to keep faith with the local members and activists by heeding their call for open selection. Let the best and worthy win.

The issue is not about women's intelligence or capabilities. it is all about fairness and natural justice. Mr. Khabra is being less than honest when he demands more Asian women MPs. It was he who blocked women from becoming councillor from the Dormers Wells and Norwood Green wards by insisting that it should be granted despensation from having 33% women councillors from the Labour party.
As far as Mr. Murphy's comments are concerned, all the women he mentioned came through an open competition not through women only constituencies.
Asian male have very few opportunities and women because of all women shortlist have more wider opportunities. Therefore in constituencies like Southall should be open where both the genders are able to offer themselves for selection.

I read this article and the comments that followed with great interest, I have a few comments of my own to add:

First, I’d like to add to Mr Taylor’s comments about female leaders of South Asia; Prime Minister Khaleda Zia of Bangladesh is another to add to your list.

Second, further to Mr Singh’s comments about the three female South Asian leaders cited by Mr Taylor having been elected in an open process, well, Mr Singh, all of the afore mentioned female leaders campaigned to success by capitalising on a male family members’ involvement in politics.

Khaleda Zia wife of former President Ziaur Rahman (Bangladesh)
Indira Ghandi daughter of former PM Jawaharlal Nehru (India)
Benazir Bhutto daughter of former President Zulfikar Ali Bhutto (Pakistan)
Sirimavo Bandaranaike wife of former PM Solomon Bandaranaike (Sri Lanka)

Third, Cllr Gupta, I’d be interested to hear, in which constituency did a woman cause such a calamity of loosing 19000 Labour voters?

The real debate in the local Labour Party should be about how do select the best candidate to succeed Mr Khabra at the next General Election to address the issues of health inequalities, drugs, crime, break down in civil society and lack of investment in this area rather than whether it should be a woman or a man candidate. The Labour Party needs to ensure that the best candidate to reflect the character and ambitions of the constituents of Ealing Southall emerges, regardless of colour, religion or gender.

Rightly, the Labour Party does not support a shortlist of only black or Asian candidates in the selection processes as a mechanism to correct the under-representation of ethnic groups in Parliament. It wants the best candidate to surface during the selection process and trusts the Labour Party members to make the right choice. The same arguments must and do hold true for not having only women shortlists, especially in a constituency like Ealing Southall.

Rightly, the Labour Party selection procedures already ensure that 50% of the candidates on the final shortlist are women and members of the ethnic minorities. This ensures that women and ethnic minority candidates get an opportunity to engage with the whole membership of the local constituency party and persuade them of their qualities. If this process can be trusted in other constituencies, then why not in Ealing Southall?
