Student's joy at scholarship

STUDENT debt may not be such a problem for one student at university after she won a £10,000 scholarship to study at The University of Manchester.

Kiran Horwich, 18, from Ealing Common, was awarded the prestigious £10,000 a year fund after passing a series of gruelling tests and interviews.

She was eligible after securing top grades in her A Level exams in the summer.

She told the Ealing Times: "It is amazing, it will be such a big help to me.

"I haven't got the money yet but when I do I'll be having a huge party.

"My family are really pleased, but my two older sisters are a bit jealous I think."

Kiran, who went to school at Twyford Church of England High School, Acton, has just started her history course at Manchester University.

The scholarship is traditionally reserved for "the best of the best", with only people with the very highest academic credentials considered.

Eligibility depends not only on at least three A grades at A Level, including A grades in every module, but also on the results of a Thinking Skills assessment, a special examination and an interview.

In addition, the award holders have demonstrated personal qualities indicating they have the potential to make distinctive contributions to University and the wider community.

Kiran, a talented pole-vaulter and a member of Middlesex Athletic Club, said she wanted to encourage more people to take up the sport during her time at Manchester.
