Sweet music as Ealing receives £1m from Arts Council

EALING should be filled with the sound of music after the borough’s music service was awarded nearly £1 million from Arts Council England this week.

The service works closely with schools and other organisations to provide high-quality and affordable music tuition and activities, including lessons in instruments as diverse as the Japanese drum.

The funding will allow the service to work more effectively through a new Ealing Music Partnership, which will extend and improve music education across the borough.

One event already planned is the inaugural Ealing Youth Prom, where some of the borough’s best young musicians will perform alongside MOBO award-winning saxonist YolanDa Brown.

The concerts, to be held at Twyford C of E High School on June 30 and July 1, will feature performances from more than 500 Ealing students drawn from 15 primary and secondary schools, as well as Ealing Schools Orchestra, Ealing Beginner Strings and the award-winning Twyford Gospel Choir.

YolanDa Brown said: “I love meeting and working with young people. My biggest inspiration comes from them. I am really looking forward to playing at Ealing Youth Prom and meeting all the fantastic young musicians from schools across the borough."

A new music programme, Mini Melodies, has also been set up to work with the youngest students in primary schools, and there are plans to expand the number of ensembles open to young people in the community.
