Tube strikes due to start at 5pm

5:00pm Monday 6th September 2010

COMMUTERS across north London are bracing themselves for the first in a possible series of 24-hour tube strikes starting at 5pm tonight.

Experts predict most services and lines will be affected by the industrial action by 10,000 members of the RMT and TSSA unions, including drivers and signallers.

The action is being taken over fears for station safety and up to 800 job cuts by London Underground which is looking to save cash.

Volunteers will be outside some stations offering advice about extra buses and escorted bike rides and some taxi ranks will be marshalled to prevent problems.

Maintenance staff will be the first to walk out at 5pm, with drivers and signallers following at 9pm. The worst affects will be felt by rush-hour passengers tomorrow morning.
