EALING boys’ cricket team have secured themselves an appearance at Lord’s Cricket Ground this Saturday as they emerged from the qualifying rounds of the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games Indoor Cricket Cup at Harrow Leisure Centre on Saturday.

The weekend’s competition saw around 250 youngsters aged 13 and under scrapping it out to make it through to the Super8 finals at the home of cricket.

Ealing emerged unbeaten from Group 1 to make sure of their place in the Lord’s finale, beating Havering, Newham and Lambeth on their way through.

Ealing team manager Harpal Sagao said: “We have been training for the last seven to eight weeks towards this event. Being Ealing’s coach is an amazing experience; to see such gifted youngsters play cricket to an outstanding level is very rewarding. The last match with Havering was very tense; they were great opponents."

He added: "In all honesty, if we were in different groups it would probably be both of us at Lords next week. Last year we qualified but we got knocked out in the quarter-finals but I reckon this year we can go all the way. The whole team of seven have been absolutely fantastic; right from the beginning until the end.”

The boys team will now join Bexley, Barking & Dagenham, Tower Hamlets, Richmond, Lewisham, Hillingdon and Redbridge in the Super8 finals. The London Youth Games is Europe’s largest annual youth sports event. In 2009 around 47,000 kids took part in 30 sports from all 33 London boroughs.
