After becoming an internet sensation at Crufts earlier this year, YouTube star Olly the Jack Russell stole the show once again at Eukanuba Discover Dogs.

The six-year-old Jack Russell Terrier made a guest appearance at the Kennel Club-organised show at the ExCeL London, where he delighted crowds with a return to the agility ring on Saturday with Milton Keynes owner Karen Parker.

The loveable pooch soared to fame at Crufts earlier this year when he took a tumble and face-planted during an agility jump attempt at the world’s largest dog show, which was all captured on camera.

Olly’s infamous appearance at the event – which sees the handler direct its dog through an obstacle course in a race for both time and accuracy – has notched up over 11 million hits on Crufts’ official YouTube channel.

His enthusiastic attempt at the A-frame obstacle, which sent him flying over the top, won chuckles from Blue Peter legend Peter Purves, who was commentating on the event as Olly captured the hearts of dog-lovers around the world.

And despite not completing the agility course in perfect running order this time round, Olly’s owner Karen was able to see the funny side as she reflected on the moment her celebrity pooch went from zero to hero.

“We were invited to do the Blue Cross agility at Crufts and Olly got slightly excited,” said Palmer, who rescued Olly as an 11-week-old puppy after he was left abandoned by the gates of a dog rehoming centre inside a cat carrier.

“He nose-dived on the first jump unfortunately but we had an absolutely fantastic time. He recovered wonderfully and he’s had 11 million hits on You Tube!”

Run by The Kennel Club, Discover Dogs gives members of the public an opportunity to meet representatives of pedigree dog breeds and watch Scruffts semi-finals from a range of categories – including the best Golden Oldie Crossbreed to Scruffts Most Handsome Crossbreed Dog.

The event also staged a range of exciting activities for canine lovers, from a ‘pet a puppy’ stressbuster clinic to an exciting obstacle course at the Young Kennel Club ‘Have a Go’ ring, where children were encouraged to try their hand at directing a pooch around an obstacle course.

And with categories such as Scruffts Best Crossbreed Rescue also on display, Palmer hailed the event’s inclusive effort in showcasing the advantages of rehoming a pooch.

“Rescue dogs are fantastic. There’s so much opportunity to find a breed you want. You can go around lots of rescue centres – either for pedigrees or crossbreeds – and they’ll match the right dog to you,” she added.

“That’s what Blue Cross did for me – and I got Olly.

“Discover Dogs is fantastic. It’s a great opportunity for people to come and have a look round at all the different breeds. You’ve got agility here – and there’s loads of different shopping to do.

“It’s nice to talk to people who are like-minded and find out a lot about other dogs and what can go on.

“The Kennel Club is here, breed associations as well, it’s just a great opportunity.”
