A longstanding Labour tradition has been reconfirmed in Ealing Southall tonight, following the re-election of Virendra Sharma with an increased majority.
Virendra Sharma (Labour) 31,720, Fabio Conti (Conservative) 9,630, John Poynton (UKIP) 504, Peter Ward (Green) 1,037, Arjinder Thiara (Workers Revolutionary) 362.
Labour hold, majority 22,090 (+3,573)
Turnout: 69.54%. Up 3.4% on 2015 election, with 45,329 ballots cast.
Mr Sharma said: “We will have a traditional Southall celebration.”
He was first elected as MP for Ealing Southall in a by-election in 2007, following the death of Labour MP Piara Khabra.
He has since held the seat at the 2010 and 2015 general elections.
He resigned from his Parliamentary Private Secretary role in 2009 in protest against the Labour Government’s proposal to build a third runway at Heathrow.
