Labour's Rupa Huq said she was 'flabbergasted' to hold onto their second most marginal seat with an increased majority of more than 11,000.

Rupa Huq (Labour) 33,037, Joy Morrissey (Conservative), 19,230, Jon Ball (Liberal Democrat), 3,075

Labour hold, 13,807 majority (+11,035)

Turnout: 74.86%.

Ms Huq said: “To be honest I would have been flabbergasted if you’d have said this at the beginning of the campaign.

“It’s an incredible feeling. I’m very honoured and grateful to the people of Ealing Central and Acton for putting their faith and trust in me again.”

With 55,543 ballots cast, this represents the highest turnout in Ealing Central and Acton in recent electoral history.

It is up from 71.4% in 2015, when Ms Huq was first elected MP for Ealing Central and Acton, ousting Conservative MP Angie Bray.

Ealing Central and Acton was 56th on Labour’s list of target seats in 2015, and with a majority of just 274 votes, it was the second most marginal majority of any Labour seat.

The Green Party announced in April 2017 that they would not be fielding a candidate, after Ms Huq confirmed her commitment to progressive environmental causes.

This so-called ‘progressive alliance’ may well have boosted Labour’s victory, as the Greens received 1,841 votes in 2015.
