New fining powers have been introduced in Ealing to tackle antisocial problems this month.

Following a six-week consultation by Ealing Council, 90% of respondents voted in favour of creating a public space protection order (PSPO) in the area.

As a result, this means council officers and police can punish those who refuse to abide by the new rules.

Ealing Broadway councillor and member of Ealing Safer Neighborhood Board and licensing panel Seema Kumar said: “I welcome the new powers and introduction of PSPO in Ealing to tackle the continuous anti-social issues experienced by our residents regularly.

“Street drinking and drug activity in public and residential areas is a huge concern.

“Additionally, alcohol licensing compliance and increased patrols will make an immense difference.

“The new powers will be a deterrent and help benefit the quality of life for all who live and visit our borough.”

Activities that will be banned include including antisocial street drinking, littering and loitering.

Those refusing to abide by the rules will be subject to a £100 fixed penalty notice.

The order will last for three years, unless the council varies the length during that time.

The first week of the order will see a week of action from council teams.

Clean-ups of fly-tipping and littering hotspots, alcohol licensing compliance checks, increased patrols and distributing leaflets with information on the PSPO to local businesses will be included in the action.
